Top 5 Energy-Efficient Dorm Supplies for Back to School

Top 5 Energy-Efficient Dorm Supplies for Back to School Energy Federation Incorporation EFI | Energy Federation Incorporation

While a bit heartbreaking, summer is winding down and fall is right around the corner. The last of the Labor Day charcoal has gone out and now it’s time to set our alarms for back to school. In honor of the start of the 2019-2020 school year, we put together a list of energy-efficient must-haves for all the students in your life returning to campus or moving into their first dorm room.

1. Advanced Power Strips

If you’re living in a dorm, you’re going to need power strips to make up for the lack of electrical outlets available to you and your roommate(s). But did you know that some of our unused appliances still draw power from the source they’re plugged into? Yep, your phone charger is still, well, charging even if your phone isn’t attached. By choosing an energy-efficient power strip, such as the Advanced Power Strip by Tricklestar, you’ll have the ability to power up and protect all your gadgets and appliances but without wasting all that energy!

2. Recycled School Supplies

Companies such as Bic or PILOT have lines of writing utensils that are made from recycled materials such as recycled plastic bottles. There is no avoiding the need for supplies like pens, pencils, and notebooks so it’s all about making an eco-friendly choice. You can even get notebooks that are 100% made up of post-consumer recycled waste. They’re called Decomposition Books and are even more stylish than your old school composition notebooks.

3. LED bulbs

Light bulbs may not be the coolest thing on your dorm shopping list, but making the change from incandescent to LED can save a lot of energy and lower emissions. In fact, according to ACEEE, if every college student in the US switched to just one LED bulb, we eliminate the emissions of a small commercial power plant for an entire school year. Plus, with Smart LED kits such as Philip’s Hue, you can control your lighting throughout the day – from bright white light while studying, to a dimmer cozy warm light when you’re hanging out with friends.

4. Water-Saving Shower Head

For those living in a college apartment or suite, wasting water may be of concern. Luckily, there are a variety of water-saving showerheads on the market that worry about that for you. Showerheads such as the Evolve Shower Head + ShowerStart TSV stop the flow of water when the water gets hot, letting you know that your shower is warm and ready for you by limiting the water flow to a trickle. Once you’re ready to use the shower, you simply pull the cord to resume its flow. You can get clean feeling like a water-saving superhero.

5. Eliminate the Plastic

Dorm life involves a lot of plastic when you think about it. From plastic wrap or bags storing food and snacks to the plastic shower caddies toting your shampoo and loofa back and forth to the showers every day – take a second to take inventory of all the plastic on your list of dorm supplies and seek alternatives where possible. Need food storage? Look for glass or metal storage containers! And that shower caddy? Look for a basket made of recycled materials or even a small wooden crate! The easiest way to stay green without spending too much cash? Reuse and recycle. Just because you’re moving into a new living space, it doesn’t mean you have to buy everything brand new. You may already have a lot of supplies you need right at home!
